Calvino helps a retired general, the mentor of his best friend, Colonel Pratt, who has trouble with a non-paying tenant. Calvino's solution to the problem plays on a powerful superstition, but the reaction goes beyond his expectations. He needs to get out of towm for a while. Only dangerous enemies arn't so easily discouraged. Things are getting hot for Calvino on another job as well. His client is Rick Casey: a shady American whose life has been darkened by the unsolved murder of his idealistic son. Calvino agrees to follow the "minor wife" of a rising Thai politician for Casey and report on her movements for two weeks, from where and when she has her nails done to where and when she meets her rich benefactor. Not much of a challenge for Calvino, who has not abundant practice trailing cheating spouses. But what seems to be a simple surveillance job pulls Calvino into a perilous web of political and familial allegiance.
