Description
[Guerrero-Murphy's] poems traverse autobiographical landscapes--the San Luis and Huerfano valleys of southern Colorado; and surreal places--the places of dreams, hospitals, backyards, her Alaskan childhood. Everything is animate and in conversation with the author, from mastodon bones to her own bones. The poems move with ease and wit among memory and dream, while the boundaries between the speaker and everything else are fluid, often harrowing, always tender. In "Birth Epic (Abridged)," with humor, fact, and wisdom, she reveals the role of birthing mother as heroic warrior. In other poems, her old mustang shows himself to be a god, a newt asks for a drink of water, and the speaker herself, under cover of a blanket, becomes The Blob. In the caretaker poems, we uncover how to survive fear and exhaustion, even abuse, and know we have "Time to See" the road we are meant to drive. Read to laugh, shiver, cry, discover.
Description
Carol Guerrero-Murphy's first book of poetry, Table Walking at Nighthawk (Ghost Road Press 2007) earned a WILLA. She is a professor Emerita (PH.D. English/creative Writing, Denver University) and continues to teach in the College Prison Program of Adams State University. Many of these poems are set in the San Luis and Huerfano Valleys of southern Colorado where she lived for most of her adult life, or in Alaska, where she was a child.
